Different Perspectives on Height

How Tallness Runs in the Family

My grandfather on my dad’s side worked for NASA as an aerospace engineer, and he stood at around 6’3. This tall stature seems to have been passed down, as I too am 6’3 today. Growing up, I noticed I would have growth spurts and suddenly shoot up a few inches at a time during puberty. Reaching this height has benefited me in sports and daily tasks like seeing over crowds. While I hit my head sometimes, I’m happy with how tall I ended up.

Standing Out in Group Photos

At 5’9, I’m considered quite tall for a woman in India. This above-average height has both advantages and disadvantages. One downside is always having to stand at the back of group photos so shorter folks can be seen. I’m also often seated at the back of classrooms or buses where visibility is limited. However, I can reach items on high shelves myself and maneuver easily through crowded areas. Overall, I’ve made peace with my stature.

Being the Shortest Among Family and Friends

Clocking in under 5 feet, I am by far the shortest person I know. This was sometimes difficult for my parents who wished I was taller. A scolding doctor set them straight that genetics determines height. As the smallest, I sometimes feel like I’m not taken seriously. On the plus side, I fit into tiny spaces and look younger than my age. Finding petite clothes and shoes can be challenging but specialty stores offer options.

Dating While Under 5 Feet Tall

At barely over 4’10, dating presents its own unique challenges. Most guys tower over me, so I prefer those around 5’8 or less. Anything significantly taller might look awkward. Heels don’t really help me appear taller either. Willing partners appreciate my small size though. Overall, my lack of stature hasn’t stopped me from finding romance.

Having an Advantage in Certain Situations

Though short in stature, there are perks to being compact. For one, I don’t bother with heels thanks to my already diminutive height. I also enjoy cleaner air in crowded areas filled with taller folk. With smaller strides, destinations feel closer. Best of all, I can reach into impossibly tiny spaces that others can’t access. So while shopping for petite clothing, I embrace what natural advantages being petite affords.

Making the Best of One’s Height However Tall or Short

In the end, none of us decide our height. As with many traits, perspectives vary greatly on what is considered ideal. For those on either end of the spectrum, creative solutions exist. I know tall friends who play up long legs for modeling or confidence in sports. Short friends highlight charm and ability to go unnoticed. Regardless of stature, what matters most is feeling comfortable in one’s own skin and making the most of what you’ve been given. Different Perspectives on Height
